What’s On Your Plate? How Nutrition Affects Your Health

By Cherie King

While everyone should be aware of proper nutrition, most of us tend to not make it much of a priority.   But it is very important to understand how nutrition affects your health and to make adjustments in your diet.   Just use the advice in the article below, and you’ll be nourishing your body with good nutrition in no time!

Try raising the number of foods you eat that contain water.  Certain fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, strawberries, and cantaloupe have a high water content, so eating these helps keep you hydrated. Hydration helps promote healthy nails, skin, and hair amongst a host of other things.

Frequently experimenting with new recipes is a great way to encourage healthy eating habits and good nutrition. The novelty and challenge of creating brand new meals encourages good habits and stops diets from being unappealing and repetitive. It also helps add excitement and adventure to the process.  My husband often jokes about when we first got married (I was only 18 years old, mind you) and how the only thing I cooked were pancakes!  That’s a gross exaggeration, but pancakes were a main staple at that time! LOL!

But when we moved from Michigan to Washington State, we lived across from a library and I started visiting there frequently; checking out cookbooks and learning to cook and bake all manner of delicious foods I didn’t know how to prepare prior (say THAT five times fast!).  So trying new things by pulling out cookbooks is a great way to add spice and variety to your diet!  But of course, elect to use the healthiest ingredients and versions possible!

Let your body have a head start early for the day awaiting you. Breakfast is pinnacle in establishing your energy level. You need foods that have plenty of carbohydrates and proteins. Eating breakfast will help to give you the energy you will need to get through the day.  And don’t let time or the lack thereof be your excuse for not having something BUT…don’t go driving to the nearest fast food or coffee house either!  If need be, look into a healthy meal replacement that’s quick and easy to prepare.

Nutrition plays a vital role in your physical and mental health. If you are dedicated to adopting healthier eating habits, you will soon find out that it’s easy to determine which foods will work best for your body AND your mind. Foods that are high in Omega 3’s are excellent for healthy brain function.

Utilize the tips provided above, and you can drastically improve your health and your life.
